TMJ Treatment Options

Treating TMJ requires Dr. Diaz to thoroughly evaluate a person’s oral and facial structures. Using high-resolution digital imaging, he can prepare a plan that incorporates one or more of the following solutions:

Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments

Pointing to jaw joint on a model skull

If a patient struggles with a misaligned bite, Dr. Diaz can gently reshape specific teeth so that the bite is more properly aligned. This process eliminates unwanted pressure on certain areas of the mouth; instead, it allows all teeth to work together to create a more comfortable bite.

Occlusal Splints

To alleviate TMJ pain caused by teeth grinding and clenching, we recommend a custom occlusal splint. Worn over the top or bottom row of teeth, the device serves as a barrier to keep enamel from wearing down over time. It also reduces the tension placed on the jaw joints while asleep and allows for a more restful night.

BOTOX® Treatment

If BOTOX treatment is recommended by our team, it may be used in combination with an occlusal splint or equilibration. By injecting the solution into the area around the jaw joints, it temporarily freezes the muscles, allowing for greater jaw mobility without continual popping. It also relaxes the muscles so that grinding and clenching is minimized.
