What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are considered the gold standard for tooth replacement. Made to replicate the look and function of natural teeth, they fuse with the existing jawbone and actively support the custom restoration that sits on top (i.e., a dental crown, bridge, or denture). Dental implants remain the preferred choice for those with missing teeth because they not only deliver maximum oral function but also last 30 years or more with the right kind of care.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – The start of any kind of dental treatment is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Diaz. He will determine if a patient needs additional services to address existing decay, gum disease, or low jawbone density.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – To make the dental implant process as convenient as possible, Dr. Diaz will perform the procedure in-house, creating small incisions in the gums to place each implant. When finished, he will close the gum tissue and provide instructions for successful aftercare.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – The process of osseointegration can take between four and six months, as the bone and implants must properly fuse. Once this is complete, patients will return to our office to receive their metal abutments, which are connector appliances that attach to a patient’s custom restoration.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – The final step to receive a longer-lasting smile is the delivery of the dental implant restoration. Based on specifications provided by Dr. Diaz, a customized crown, bridge, or denture will be secured on top to create a healthier smile that looks beautiful and functions smoothly.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Patients who choose dental implants can expect many great benefits that they might not otherwise receive with other tooth replacement solutions. Created to last decades if not a lifetime, these prosthetics may cost more upfront but prove cost-effective in the long run. Their permanence in the jawbone makes them unlikely to need replacement over time, and their stability allows patients to retrieve 70% or more of their original bite force. But these are just a few of the many advantages that can come from dental implants.
