Children’s Dental Checkups & Cleanings

Similar to adults, children should also see Dr. Diaz for regular six-month dental checkups and cleanings. Since many young patients are still learning how to properly clean their teeth, we can target hard-to-reach areas, removing harmful plaque and tartar, while also checking for signs of cavities and gum disease. We’ll also perform an oral cancer screening and make sure each child’s bite is functioning properly before offering helpful at-home oral hygiene tips for better dental health.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Cavities are considered the most common oral health problem among children. Novice brushing skills and unhealthy eating habits are often to blame, which is why it’s important for dentists to be prepared should a cavity arise. With silver diamine fluoride (SDF), we can apply it to the decayed area, allowing for a more conservative form of treatment. The silver effectively stops the spread of decay, while the fluoride strengthens tooth enamel to protect it against harmful bacteria.

Athletic Mouthguards/Sportsguards

Children and teenagers who enjoy playing sports or being physically active can benefit from a customized athletic mouthguard. Made to fit comfortably inside the mouth, it covers the upper row of teeth to protect against excessive pressure caused by a hard tackle, fly ball, or even a sudden fall. Unlike boil-and-bite varieties at sporting goods stores, our mouthguards fit snugly for maximum protection.

Pulp Treatment

The innermost layer of a tooth is known as the pulp. Consisting of nerves, blood vessels, and tissues, it can cause intense pain if infected or damaged. When a child complains of a severe toothache, the problem may not be a lodged piece of food. Instead, it may be something more serious that requires pulp therapy. If so, Dr. Diaz will examine the tooth to determine if a portion or all of the pulp needs to be removed. This procedure is used to not only eliminate existing pain but also thwart an existing infection from spreading to other areas of the mouth and save a child’s tooth from being extracted.
