Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is also known as deep cleaning. This process requires two steps to effectively clean teeth and gums while also ensuring proper gum reattachment and reducing the chances of reinfection in the future. Scaling requires that a member of our team clear away any hardened plaque and tartar from teeth and the gumline before moving on to root planing. Root planing involves smoothing out the tooth root so that the gums will reattach and make it harder for bacteria to adhere to the area.

Antibiotic Treatment

Arestin antibiotic treatment is widely used by dentists throughout the U.S. as a safe and effective way to target even the smallest areas of bad bacteria. Dr. Diaz will likely use it in combination with scaling and root planing by placing it within the gum pockets. Over a few weeks, the medicine will disperse and produce a healthier environment while also encouraging the healing of a person’s gum pockets.
